GMKA Study Highlights How HealUA App Is Transforming Medical Care During the War in Ukraine
The Global Medical Knowledge Alliance research team has published a study in the prestigious Journal of Global Health evaluating the impact of the HealUA app during the war in Ukraine. Developed by GMKA in response to the full-scale Russian invasion, the platform has become a crucial tool for bolstering Ukraine’s healthcare system during this crisis.
Russian military aggression has inflicted unprecedented damage on Ukraine’s healthcare infrastructure, with over 1,500 medical facilities — including hospitals, clinics, and emergency response units — damaged or destroyed. Healthcare professionals are operating under extraordinary conditions, such as in bomb shelters, amid missile attacks, or in remote regions, often without access to essential medical resources.
In response, GMKA, in partnership with startup studio Empat, launched HealUA, a mobile app designed to provide Ukrainian doctors with fast access to peer-to-peer consultations. This innovative platform bridges geographical and infrastructural gaps, delivering timely medical expertise even under dire circumstances.
How HealUA Works
HealUA enables real-time consultations among Ukrainian physicians and local and international medical experts, compensating for the disrupted communication channels caused by the war. By fostering the exchange of knowledge and second opinions, the app empowers healthcare professionals to address complex clinical cases swiftly and effectively. Its built-in translation services, supporting Ukrainian and English, ensure seamless international collaboration.
Key Findings of the Study
An analysis of HealUA’s performance over two years (May 2022 – May 2024) revealed impressive outcomes:
- User Base: 3,861 registered physicians, 95% based in Ukraine.
- Case Support: 474 cases submitted, with 97.3% receiving timely responses.
- Efficiency: 84.6% of consultations were completed within 24 hours of the request.
- Specialties: Dermatology, internal medicine, and pediatrics were the most requested areas for consultations.
Today, HealUA connects over 4,200 certified doctors from 30 countries and supports consultations across 39 medical specialties. Designed with a strong emphasis on data security, the app guarantees the confidentiality of patient information and ensures secure communication.
The GMKA study underscores that HealUA is not only a lifeline for Ukrainian physicians but also a model for telemedicine in other crisis scenarios worldwide. Its rapid response capabilities, robust security measures, and expansive global network of experts position HealUA as a powerful tool for delivering medical care in extreme conditions.
